While some occupations are more dangerous than others, it is important to take safety precautions in any career field. Steps to avoid injuries on the job include:

 

  • Follow safety procedures. Be aware of any posted warnings on the job site and take the necessary safety precautions at all times, particularly when working in potentially hazardous conditions.

  • Get appropriate training. Not being properly trained for various tasks increases the risk of mishaps, putting you and your co-workers at risk.

  • Protect your muscles, joints, and tendons. Carrying, pushing or pulling heavy items, reaching for objects, and repetitive tasks can result in soft tissue injuries, one of the most commonly cited reasons for workers’ compensation claims.

  • Take regular breaks. Stepping away from your job periodically and taking regular lunch breaks can help you stay more alert and focused on the job, reducing accident risks.

  • Speak up about safety. If you notice potentially dangerous situations or are not feeling well, let a supervisor known immediately.

  • Maintain a healthy work/life balance.This also helps to prevent injuries. In addition to taking time off to enjoy favorite activities, take care of your health and attend doctor visits regularly.

  • Be a defensive driver. Car accidents are a leading cause of potentially life-threatening personal injuries. Avoid distractions when driving, give other motorists plenty of room, steer clear of those engaged in reckless or aggressive driving behaviors, and follow the speed limit.

  • Protect yourself against slips and falls. Another common cause of personal injuries, slips and falls can occur at home or in public places. Wear appropriate shoes, remove clutter along walkways, and be mindful of wet floors, uneven paving stones, poorly lit areas, and other dangerous conditions when out.

  • Make an emergency plan. Accidents happen suddenly and for a variety of reasons. Be aware of emergency exits in public places and have an emergency plan in place at home to prevent injuries.
