Three Common Types of Personal Injuries and Warning Signs You Need To Be Aware Of

February 21, 2020

When accidents resulting in personal injuries happen, victims are often in shock. As a result, they may downplay the incident or the extent of the damage they suffer. Unfortunately, this can jeopardize their health and their rights to compensation in a personal injury claim. The following highlight three common types of personal injuries which often get overlooked and the warning signs you need to be aware of.

Soft Tissue Injuries

Soft tissue injuries involve strains, sprains, or tears of muscles, tendons, ligaments, or other soft tissues in the body. They are among the most common types of personal injuries and one of the most likely overlooked. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) warns that while symptoms may be subtle, not getting medical care or not following your doctor’s instructions when it comes to treatment and activity restrictions could result in lingering disabilities.

Soft tissue injuries happen frequently due to car accidents, slips or falls, and sports or recreational mishaps. Even with proper treatment, recovery times for even relatively minor soft tissue injuries can be as long as six months to a year. Warning signs include:

  • Swelling and bruising in the affected area

  • Pain or numbness

  • Limited movement and mobility

Back and Neck Injuries

Back and neck injuries are another common type of personal injury with symptoms that can take a while to fully appear. Back and neck injuries can involve whiplash, slipped or herniated discs, and fractured vertebrae. Recovery often requires rest, medication, and physical therapy. In some situations, additional testing and surgical procedures may be required.

Even when you take the appropriate precautions, these injuries can cause ongoing impairments. In severe cases, damage to the spinal cord or column can result. Warning signs include:

  • Pain in the affected area or in other parts of the body

  • Numbness and tingling in the arms, hands, or feet

  • Limited range of movement and impaired mobility

  • Muscle spasms in the area surrounding the injury

Head Injuries

Head injuries are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. They can result from any type of bump, blow, or sudden jolt. They frequently occur during sports or recreational activities, in motor vehicle accidents, or as a result of slips, falls, and getting struck by objects. Concussions and skull fractures are both common and can result in traumatic brain injuries (TBI), causing permanent physical, emotional, and cognitive impairments.

Head injuries are also one of the most subtle types of injuries, with symptoms that may not appear until days or even weeks after an accident. Not getting treatment could prove deadly. Warning signs include:

  • Headaches

  • Vision disturbances

  • Memory loss

  • Dizziness or fainting

  • Problems communicating or understanding what is being said
