Prevent Memorial Day Accidents & Injuries

May 11, 2018

As the official kick off of summer, there are likely to be plenty of picnics and parties with families and friends to attend over Memorial Day weekend. In the midst of making plans, it is important to make safety a top priority. The following provides tips to help protect you and those you love against personal injuries over the holiday.

Safety On The Road

Summer means an increase of traffic in general, and you can expect heavy crowds over the holiday weekend. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), roughly 40 million people will be traveling, with the majority taking to the roads.

In the Carolinas, there will be the usual flood of tourists flocking to port cities such as Charleston and to the neighboring beaches. Whether you are headed out for a beach day or simply across town for a family picnic, keep these important safety tips in mind:

  • Expect delays. Give yourself plenty of time to get where you are going, and avoid aggressive driving behaviors such as tailgating and improper passing.

  • Give your car a check up. It is a good time of year to make any needed vehicle repairs. Do regular maintenance, such as checking tire pressure and fluid levels, as well.

  • Stay focused. Keep your cell phone in the glove compartment and refuse to be distracted by changing GPS or radio stations.

  • Obey traffic laws. Remember to drive the speed limit and pay attention to traffic signs and signals.

  • Avoid alcohol and other substances. In addition to not drinking and driving, be aware that even taking over the counter or prescription medications can impact your driving skills.

In the event a car accident does occur, pull over, notify law enforcement, and exchange information with other drivers. Even if you think your injuries are minor, get medical attention immediately to protect your rights in a claim.

Prevent Personal Injuries

In addition to car accidents, there are a variety of ways in which serious personal injuries occur over the summer months. Play it safe by following these tips from the American Red Cross:

  • If you are cooking out, make sure the grill is attended at all times and keep a water source nearby, just in case.

  • If you are going to the beach or pool, make sure there is a lifeguard and avoid going into the water alone. Remember, swimming and alcohol do not mix, so avoid the temptation to over indulge.

  • If you will be out in the sun, wear sunscreen and keep plenty of water and other fluids on hand.

  • If you will be using fireworks, make sure they are legal in your area. Watch where they are aimed, and do not let children too close.
