What To Do After A Hit And Run Accident

Residents in the Crosland Park section of Aiken have been increasingly concerned about traffic conditions and speeding drivers, particularly considering the number of pedestrians in the area. Their worst fears were confirmed recently when a man was fatally struck and killed. To make matters worse, the accident was a hit and run. Unfortunately, these types of car accidents are common. Even when they are not fatal, they pose a significant risk for serious personal injuries. The following provides information on what to do after a hit and run accident.

Fatal Hit and Run Kills Aiken Man

According to Channel 12/WRDW, a 33-year-old man was killed in the early morning hours of Friday August 3, 2018. This occurred as he was walking home after an evening out with friends. The accident occurred on York Street, across from the Crosland community. The victim was reportedly on his way to the nearby Waffle House, when witnesses at the scene say he was struck by the driver of a dark colored SUV. The driver did not stop and the victim died at the scene.

The area where the accident occurred is the sight of numerous stores and fast food places, which residents claim attracts plenty of foot traffic. Unfortunately, speeding cars are also common, which has presented increasing hazards. As local police step up traffic enforcement efforts, investigators are searching for evidence that could lead them to the hit and run driver. They have obtained surveillance tapes from nearby stores and traffic signals and have alerted the community and local repair shops. Anyone with information about the accident or the driver is urged to come forward.

What to Do in the Event of a Hit and Run

When hit and run accidents occur, drivers may escape justice. Victims and family members are deprived of their rights to compensation, which can help them as they recover. In this situation, the more information you have to provide to the police, the greater the likelihood the driver will be apprehended. If you are a victim in this type of accident, State Farm recommends the following tips:

  • Get as much information about the vehicle as possible, such as the make, model, or color of the car or their license plate number

  • Make note of as many details about the driver as possible

  • Be specific on where the accident occurred, as there may be traffic surveillance cameras nearby

  • Be alert to potential witnesses, such as store owners, pedestrians, or other drivers, who may be able to provide additional information about the accident or the driver involved
