Police Focus on Preventing Drunk Driving Accidents Over Labor Day
While summer is almost officially over, Labor Day weekend presents the opportunity for a final fling. Many of us will be attending picnics, pool parties, and other outdoor events to celebrate. However, when making your plans, be aware of how alcohol use might fit into the picture. There is an increased police focus on preventing drunk driving accidents over Labor Day, as it’s one of the busiest times of the year for this type of occurrence. In partnership with national safety officials, they want you to be aware of the dangers and DUI charges you could face if you are caught driving while intoxicated.
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
Labor Day is on September 2, 2019, and national officials are already gearing up to prevent car accidents from happening. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a news release informing the public about a public service program that will go into effect for the next few weeks.
The program is called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” It represents a partnership between the NHTSA, other public service agencies, and tens of thousands of law enforcement officials. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of drunk driving accidents by being aggressive in law enforcement efforts. Drivers can expect the following:
An increased police presence on the road
More frequent monitoring and traffic stops
Greater likelihood of DUI checkpoints in areas where drunk driving accidents have previously occurred
They will be doing more than just targeting drivers who may have had too much to drink. They will also be apprehending those suspected of driving under the influence of illegal drugs, prescription drugs, or over the counter medications.
Sober or Slammer
South Carolina has a long history of problems with drunk driving, and public safety campaigns seem to have little impact on people’s behavior. The Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) states that over half of all traffic fatalities that occur in the state each year are the result of impaired driving.
Several years ago, law enforcement officials introduced the Sober or Slammer campaign. In addition to calling attention to drunk driving dangers, it aims to make drivers aware of the serious penalties that can result from driving under the influence. These include:
For a first DUI offense: Fines and surcharges of roughly $1,000, up to 30 days in jail, and a six month driver’s license suspension
For a second DUI offense: Fines and surcharges of roughly $10,000, up to one year in jail, and a year-long driver’s license suspension
For a third DUI offense: Fines and surcharges of roughly $14,000, up to three years imprisonment, and a four year driver’s license suspension
