Prevent Accidents and Injuries With These Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween in Aiken is one of the highlights of the year. Between trick or treating and community events, there is something going on the entire week. While dressing children (or yourself) up in costumes and passing out candy seems like harmless fun, the rate of accidents and personal injuries over Halloween is enough to scare anyone. To protect yourself and those you care about, prevent accidents and injuries with these Halloween safety tips.

Preventing Pedestrian Accidents Over Halloween

Pedestrian accidents are a real danger over Halloween. The National Safety Council (NSC) warns that October in general is a dangerous month in terms of auto accident risks and that they reach their peak on October 31. Children are more than twice more likely to fall victim to crashes and collisions on Halloween than at any other time of the year. To protect yourself and any young trick or treaters in your area, follow these safety tips:

  • Be aware of dates and times for trick or treating. Halloween events in Aiken are not only for one night, but throughout the entire week.

  • Plan your child’s route. Before taking your child out, plan the route you will take. Avoid areas with heavy traffic and make sure there are designated crosswalks at intersections.

  • Slow your speed. As Halloween events typically occur in the early evening hours, go slowly if you are coming home from work or heading out for the evening.

  • Keep your eyes on the road. Distracted driving is dangerous at any time, but particularly so on Halloween. Young trick or treaters may not look before stepping into the street. Pay extra attention anywhere that children or adults are likely to congregate.

Parents can help increase their child’s visibility on the road by using reflective tape on costumes and having the child carry a flashlight. If you are going to local haunted houses or harvest themed events which will likely be crowded, be mindful of parking along the street. Pull to the side as much as possible and look both ways before getting out of your vehicle.

Safety Tips To Prevent Halloween Accidents and Injuries

Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents are not the only cause of personal injuries over Halloween. Slips, trips, and falls, burns, and poisonings are all common as well. To protect yourself and others, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following safety tips:

  • Make sure costumes fit properly. Those that drag on the ground or hinder your movement increase the risk of fall injuries.

  • Use battery operated candles. Use electric candles only when creating a spooky atmosphere around your home to avoid burn injuries.

  • Keep sidewalks clear. Make sure paths and sidewalks in front of your home are free from trip hazards.

  • Inspect candy. Avoid giving out homemade baked goods or loose candy and inspect your child’s bag before allowing them to dig in.
