Hit and Run Driver Apprehended By Police After Rollover Accident

Hit and run accidents are unfortunately common in our area. What is far less common is the way a hit and run driver was apprehended by police after a rollover accident. While evading law enforcement and engaging them in a high-speed pursuit, the vehicle that the hit and run driver was operating flipper. These types of car accidents are among the least likely to occur but are capable of producing the most serious personal injuries. The following highlights common ways in which they happen and who can be held liable for damages you suffer as a result.

How Do Rollover Accidents Happen?

A recent rollover accident in Aiken left two people injured. According to an October 23, 2019 WRDW News report, the crash happened in the evening hours near Richland Ave and involved a motorist fleeing police after an earlier hit and run. Law enforcement is still investigating, but they state that the driver suffered injuries and was taken to a local hospital while a passenger was placed under arrest. Two children who were in the back seat at the time were not hurt.

A rollover crash in which the majority of people in the vehicle were unharmed is a relatively rare occurrence. According to reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), they are one of the most potentially deadly types of crashes. Despite accounting for less than three percent of accidents, rollovers are responsible for more than 35 percent of all motor vehicle deaths. Rollovers are more likely to happen in taller vehicles, such as SUVs. Common causes include:

  • Speeding and going too fast for conditions. Going over the speed limit and taking turns or curves in the road too fast increases the risk of rollover accidents.

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In nearly half of all rollover crashes, the driver was under the influence at the time. Impaired judgment, reduced reaction times, and lack of coordination are often responsible.

  • Driving while distracted. Swerving into a median strip, guardrail, or into gravel areas off the highway can cause a loss of balance in the vehicle, making a rollover more likely. Distracted driving is often the culprit.

Who Is Responsible For Rollover Accident Injuries?

While the NHTSA points to reckless behavior on the part of drivers as one of the most common causes of rollover accidents, automobile manufacturers also bear some responsibility. Consumer Reports advises that there have been numerous recalls over the years due to larger vehicles which were known to become unbalanced, increasing rollover risks. One of the main problems is that there are a lack of safety regulations aimed at specifically reducing rollovers and the injuries that result. While reinforced roofing in SUVs can significantly reduce fatalities, the majority of manufacturers fail to provide it.
