“Bad Drivers Of South Carolina” – SC Ranks Low In Driver Safety

Car accidents are a significant health risk throughout the United States, leaving millions of people each year suffering serious and potentially life threatening personal injuries. There are multiple factors that play a role in making collisions more likely to occur, such as dangerous road, traffic, and weather conditions. Unfortunately, in many cases, it is the reckless driving behaviors of others on the road which put you and your passengers at the greatest risk. A recently released study indicates that bad drivers of South Carolina have placed the state near the bottom of the list in terms of these behaviors, making our roads some of the most dangerous in the nation.

South Carolina Driver Safety

In late January 2018, WalletHub reported the results of a study which ranked all 50 states in terms of the best and worst for driving. It compared each state with more than 20 factors ranging from vehicle costs, maintenance and repairs to weather, driver safety, and road conditions. In terms of overall rank, South Carolina came in 30th, significantly behind neighboring North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. In terms of overall driver safety, we were near the bottom of the list at number 48. In reaching this number, the study weighed and compared the following:

  • Total number of car accidents due to reckless driving behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, and driving under the influence

  • The number of DUIs and DUI-related accidents in the state

  • Money spent on law enforcement and highway safety

  • The number of people listed by insurance companies as being ‘at risk drivers’

Car Accidents In Our Area

According to the latest available statistics from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, there are more than 130,000 car accidents which occur annually in the state, a number which continues to grow by as much ten percent each year. Nearly 1,000 people end up being killed in these accidents, while close to 40,000 others suffer serious injuries. While you cannot control the actions of the bad drivers of South Carolina, you can take steps on your own to protect yourself against these types of collisions:

  • Make sure to take your vehicle in for regular maintenance

  • Avoid driving during heavy rain, snow, or icy conditions

  • Make sure that everyone in your vehicle has their seatbelt fastened

  • Obey all speed limits and slow down on dangerous roads, in heavy traffic, and around road construction

  • Pay attention and heed all traffic signs and signals

  • Avoid aggressive driving behaviors such as tailgating or failure to yield

  • Get plenty of rest before taking trips

  • Do not get behind the wheel if you have consumed any amount of alcohol
