Pedestrian Killed Due To Hit and Run Accident In Aiken County

A recent car accident in Aiken County resulted in the death of a pedestrian. According to an August 25, 2021 news report by The State, the crash happened on S.C. 28, in the Beech Island area close to the South Carolina/Georgia state line. At approximately 11:00 p.m. in the evening, an unknown vehicle heading east struck a 64-year-old Jackson man walking along the road. Sadly, the driver failed to stop at the scene and the victim died as a result of his injuries. Highway Patrol is investigating the case and has not yet apprehended the driver involved.

Hit and run accidents in Aiken are unfortunately common and can happen for a variety of reasons. Common factors that cause at-fault drivers to flee the scene include:

  • They panic at the time of the accident and fear criminal charges for turning themselves in afterward;

  • They are driving without insurance and hope to avoid financial responsibility;

  • They lack a valid driver’s license or vehicle registration;

  • They are under the influence of alcohol at the time or engaged in other illegal activities;

  • They are wanted by police on an unrelated matter;

  • They have issues with citizenship status and fear Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will get involved.

Holding Hit and Run Drivers Accountable

The American Automobile Association (AAA) reports that a hit and run accident happens somewhere in the country roughly once every 43 seconds. In addition to creating additional burdens for law enforcement officials and making it harder for victims to get compensation for personal injuries, failing to stop at the scene also increases the severity of outcomes by depriving victims of the immediate medical care they need.

If you are injured by a hit-and-run driver, it is important to contact our Aiken personal injury attorney immediately. Actions we can take to help you get the compensation you need to recover include:

  • Interviewing eyewitnesses, who may be able to provide a description of the driver or the car involved;

  • Reviewing surveillance tapes from nearby businesses or traffic signals, which can help identify the license plate number;

  • Revisiting the accident scene, to gather additional evidence;

  • Talking to local mechanics, who the driver may have gone to for repairs.
